Creative Media Roles [Lloyd]

Game Designer– Game designers are an important part of a comprehensive team of designers and developers that coordinate the complex task of creating a new video game. They can lead many teams with many aspects needed when developing a new game or just work with one group to complete certain must needed tasks to improve the game.

Animator– Animators are a type of artist who creates multiple images, known as frames, which give an illusion of movement called animation when is widely displayed in several media forms such as in film, television, and video games. The job for an animator is to animate what the storyboarders have provided them and work together to create a completed form of animation.

Website Project Evaluation

————————————————

For this project, we had to design a website relating to a topic we like using the website creator Wix, the topic i picked is Anime and decide to make a review site based on that topic similar to the vains of IGN and MyAnimeList respectfully.

The first thing i did was research the topic that will be the theme for the website and then after, i looked into review sites to give inspiration to my own site.

The next thing i did was the main website which i can select either a template or create your own, i went with the templete because it will be easier and i can edit it into my own website with my own pages.

The anime i picked was Tokyo Ghoul because it was an anime i really enjoyed watching last Summer, i did research on some of the main characters featured in the anime for the rest of the pages on my website.

After doing the research, i began constructing my website which took me about two weeks to complete, i think i produced a really convincing website which can attacted the type of people who are into the topic displayed throughout the various pages i have made for my page.

Improvements i would make is some of the design for the website and give it a more streamlined look, i would also add more colour and background effects to make it look more appalling instead of looking too generic, i really enjoyed this project and making my own website on Wix.

UNIT 6 Final Outcome and Evaluation

Photo Editing Link: https://www.photoeditor.com/

For this project, we had to pick either film or photography and use a form of identity, I picked photography because filming for me will take longer and will slow me down.

The first thing i did was researching into the many techniques for taking photographs such as using zoom and focus to pull off a better looking picture for the project with the use of my smartphone .

The next thing i did was research about what sort of identity I want to present for this UNIT so I decided to go with Brand Identity and researched about three photographers along with adding examples of the some of their work onto the page.

My original plan was to go out into towns and cities to take photos of brands but due to the pandemic, I went back to the drawing board and thought of a new idea but still sticking to the brand identity in some shape or form, my plan was to use used home products that is most likely littered and use them both them as my own form of brand identity.

I took 10 photos but in the end, I picked out 8 of them in the end cause these two photos didn’t work with the other pictures like for example, they were taken indoors and they were the first two I have taken which is why I have not used them for this project all together and were cut.

After doing some research, since I couldn’t go outside of the house during this time, I decided to rework it from being just different brand pictures with effects to recognisable brands which are most likely thrown and nature takes it over bringing an negative impact and environmental message with it .

Improvements I would like to make is a lot more planning and focus on the UNIT along with many other ideas I would like to try out for the UNIT, I think this UNIT was really successful in the end and its such a shame that the pandemic really crushed my original vision but luckily my workaround worked really well and im proud of it.

Cloudy with a Chance Sound Replacement Project

FULL VIDEO!

The concept of the project is to create sound effects using Foley, Voice acting using the original script and final editing touchs from a existing piece of video media that the tutor has selected us to do, I used Adobe Audition for the main process and recording while later on I used Adobe Premiere for clean up and final edits before getting ready for it to get rendered and uploaded on YouTube.

The first part was to get into groups and begin to plan on what we are going to do first for the project, then the tutor decided what the first thing we are gonna do since this is a 3 week long project in a studio while another 1 to 2 weeks for editing and final adjustments for the project.

We did the foley part first which we produced it in a small room/studio where we can make the right sounds like trying to match the characters movements in their respected environment in this case was a small wooden pier which we used a plank of wood and recorded it for the project, then we did the metal ladder that two of the main characters are on so we used the iron heater to make the movements when either Flynn or the monkey moves in the scene.

The hardest part was trying to match it, it took a few tries but we got there in the end and continued with the other parts of the foley like water splashing, metal clangs, creature noises like the monkey and rat-bird and finally some details like the burgers hitting the floor for example.

The next part we did was the voice acting which went pretty well, luckily it didn’t take that long to do since the script was only a page and a half, for Steve (the monkey) we pitched up his voice quite higher to replicate what was done in the original clip, it only took us a day and was successful.

The final part was to edit the sound effects and voice acting to match perfectly with the clip, I added some reverb onto the voice recordings to make it sound like they are outside and not in a recording studio, added some extra sound effects that we couldn’t recreate like an ocean ambience for example and some soundtrack to give the clip more character like in the original, after all this is done I began rendering the video into a MP4 and then uploaded it onto my YouTube Channel.

I think this piece of work is very successful because I edited it to my best level on both Audition and Premiere along with trying to keep the clip as faithful as the original clip we were given when we started this project, I am very proud of this project because

  • The voice acting was done really well by me and the other members of the group!
  • The foley sound effects were on point and match perfectly with the clip!
  • The teamwork to make this project work amazing and we got the project done in time!

The project was really successful and has helped me use my editing skills as an advantage for this course.

Camera Techniques!

Focus: Focus basically involves using the cameras lenses to make the image look crisp andclear rather than blurry and distorted to the eye.

NIKON D800E + 105mm f/2.8 @ 105mm, ISO 200, 1/320, f/5.6

Focus length: Focus length is when in the distance between the lens and the image sensor when the subject is in focus and affects the image drastically to the eye.

Aperture size: Aperture can be defined as the opening in a lens through which light passes to enter the camera.

Example of large aperture portrait.

Shutter speed: Also known as exposed light, it is the time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light and when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph.

Example of Fast Shutter Speed

Depth of field: The distance between the nearest and the furthest objects giving a focused image.

A dreamy moody landscape photo with daisies in the foreground and blurred background, photographed using shallow depth of field.

Zoom: When using optical zoom, some digital cameras will have a smooth zoom, meaning you can stop at any point when preparing for your shot.

Phototuts

ISO: The ISO number is a measure of light sensitivity. It originally referred to the sensitivity of a given type of film you can include when adjust the camera.

ISO Sensitivity

White balance: A process which removes unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo.

Digital Cameras, White Balance and Color Temperature

Exposure: The amount of light which reaches your camera-sensor or film. It is a crucial part of how bright or dark your pictures appear when you are filming or taking pictures.

Film Trailer Evaluation

FULL TRAILER HERE!

The concept of the project is to create a fan-made trailer from any film or tv series and present it in a different genre which is unrelated to the film or tv series.

For this project, I decided to select Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope as the film I want to do for the trailer because its a popular franchise and almost everyone knows it.

The genre I picked to present the film in the trailer I have produced in Adobe Premiere is Spaghetti Western, the reason why I picked it is because the first part of the film is set on a desert planet which is quite similar to the settings in Spaghetti Western films that were popular in the 1960s.

The first part of my research was to investigate the audience for the original Film. From the review site IMDB, I found out that Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope seems to be enjoyed by all age groups from old to young. This is because it’s a family picture. This was supported by the BFI yearbook for 2016 which shows audience for Rogue One, as this is a Star Wars film too, it’s reasonable to assume the audiences are similar since its the same film franchise.

Things like Male or Female ratings shows the different appeal between them both, Socio economic and Ethnicity are not included within the stats on the websites because it would be too extreme and complicated but can be found in the BFI Statistics yearbook, this research has helped me a lot and has helped out what I need to do for this project.

After I have done that research, I began to watch old spaghetti western trailers on YouTube to get a reference and an idea on how to make a good trailer with a genre that is unrelated to the original film for the project.

Then after watching the trailers, I went and had a look around YouTube for the soundtracks that I will be using for the trailer and came across the soundtrack from “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” from 1966 which had the perfect score for the trailer I am producing.

I created a new project on Premiere, downloaded the film from Microsoft Outlook from Steve and began editing the trailer, it was challenging since I needed mostly the desert shots and the interior action shots which was very difficult to get since I needed the right scenes with the near perfect transitions and editing style to produce this trailer.

One thing that was tricky during the production of the trailer was the placement of the soundtrack since I needed the right timing to transition from one track to another, I wanted to fit and match with the clips that I have complied together, it took a while but I managed to place the soundtrack and footage perfectly in sync.

The final outcome Is what I really wanted for this project and I think I have done really well making it in Premiere, the trailer I produced perfectly replicates the western genre with the music and editing with the Star Wars footage which felt natural on the desert planet in which the first quarter of the film takes place.

If I would make any changes, I would’ve planned a lot faster and begin way sooner but I had some other work to finish off first before getting into this project.

Undertale

(LLOYDS LESSON)

Undertale is an RPG game created by Indie Developer Toby Fox, the game is about choice between a Pacifist Run, A Neutral Run and a Genocide Run which all have different interactions, differences you can spot and all have completely separate endings.

THIS IS THE RELEASE TRAILER!

The game was crowdfunded on Kickstarter by people on the internet which was successful and the game was released on PC first and has grown a large following and a dedicated fanbase, it has released on multiple platforms like PS4, PS Vita and Nintendo Switch platforms.

The games main goal is choice and a question of what would you do if were in the shoes of a child who has fallen down into a mysterious underground world where monsters are banished a long time ago, the soundtrack was also composed by Toby Fox and its got to be one of the best video-game soundtracks ever created for a Indie Game.

Part of its popularity was thanks to many YouTubers who have discovered the game by fans or by themselves, examples being jacksepticeye, Markiplier and PewDiePie who have shared their Lets Plays through their respective YouTube channels to millions of their fans and help increase the popularity of this one Indie game and a Developer with a passion for incredible talent.

WHAT IS PRODUCTION SOUND?

Production Sound is the complex craft of recording live dialogue on the set during principal photography.

WHY IS IT CALLED FOLEY?

Foley artists create these sounds in a recording studio during post-production, in synchrony with the picture, to enhance the quality of the audio. Foley sound got its name from Jack Foley, the sound effects artists who developed and shaped the technique.

WHEN DID FILMMAKERS FIRST START USING FOLEY EFFECTS?

In the 1920s, Foley was first used during live broadcasts of radio plays in the 1920s. Rather than using sound effects played off a phonograph, which were often low-quality and unreliable, radio studios hired sound artists to create the effects on cue.

HOW IS IT USUALLY RECORDED?

Foley is created by the sound artist mimicking the actual sound source in a recording studio.

WHAT FILMS ARE FAMOUS FOR USING IT?

The Jazz Singer released in 1927 was a game changer since it was the first to implement synchronized sound but it lacked sound effects until the film Show Boat in 1936 which introduced Foleys technique for the first time with his sound technique which would later be named after him.

DESCRIBE A FOLEY SESSION?

Its a large studio containing many objects to record with a microphone, a screen showing the film footage so that the Foley artist can mimic the actors actions or movement to replace the sound that

WHAT DO YOU NOTICE ABOUT THE MICROPHONE PLACEMENT IN THE 1970S FOLEY SESSION. WHY DO YOU THINK THEY PLACED THE MICS LIKE THAT?

To make the recording sound more realistic and open unlike a traditional studio which would make the sounds very artifical.

___________________________________________________________________________

For this project, we had to follow a program which would allow us to make a simple game on the game engine Unity, the aim was to learn how to code certain things which would help us learn the basics on making a game in Unity.

The aim was to control a ball, score a certain amount of points and win the game, sounds simple but complicated to make, I did struggle through some of the coding and I was quite slow because I’ve never used a game engine or coded something so complicated before.

Three things I found easy with the project was the interface of Unity and how it works which wasn’t that challenging, the concept of the project for what we need to do and finally the website we used to follow the project with.

Three things I found hard with the project was the coding which took quite a while to figure out and get it to work, the complicated tabs which were confusing and was slightly cluttered on and the UI which was the hardest thing to do since it took me at least two hours to do.

I think next time if I do something game-related, I would focus a lot more on it and work a lot faster since I know how to use the Unity Engine and its coding techniques and be on time for the deadline.

Audience Research

IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/ratings?ref_=tt_ov_rt

IMDb shows a lot of information about the demographic of the film like gender, age, top 1000 voters and US/Non US users to rate the film in a fair rating system, the sources have a accurate number of users on the bottom of each box all variation of different numbers of people who have contributed to the website to review the film.

ROTTEN TOMATOES: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_wars

Rotten Tomatoes has two ratings scores, A “Tomatometer” which is for reviewers and critics and an Audience Score which shows the audience total reaction to the film on a not so professional level, they also have a description about the film written from a top critic as a way to simplify the main reaction of the film.

ROGER EBERT: https://www.rogerebert.com

Roger Ebert. com is a continuation of the review work of the legendary critic the late Roger Ebert, the website has a simple 3 star system but its not a website you can write a review on since its focused on the legacy rather than the audience.

METACRITIC: https://www.metacritic.com

Metacritic has a similar rating system as Rotten Tomatoes like the “Metascore” which is reviewed from critics from either the website from 0 to 100 or from other platforms and a “User score” which is for main audience which is done from a 0 to 10 rating system, it also comes with a “Vote Now” below so you can rate the feature film without even signing in.
